A Spark of Knowledge

Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Educational Curriculum

Learn About Burn CurriculimThe problem of juvenile firesetting and arson is a complex issue that requires the cooperation of many components of the community to resolve. Organization of community representatives to address this issue can only be accomplished if someone takes the initiative to create a multi-disciplinary group of individuals dedicated to providing a comprehensive intervention for these juveniles.

What is the background behind "A Spark of Knowledge"?
The Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner's Office assembled and guided the Pennsylvania Child Firesetting and Juvenile Arson Task Force, and its superseding group, the Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Advisory Board. This group traveled throughout the state, presenting workshops which focused on educating the community and providing the tools necessary to organize regional intervention programs that would meet the goals of the Pennsylvania Intervention Protocol.

They also recognized the need for a standard, comprehensive, statewide curriculum that was both age appropriate and user-friendly, that would meet the PA Intervention Protocol, and would be available to all educators involved with regional JFS programs, as well as those wishing to establish an effective JFS program in their area.

The state of Pennsylvania then commissioned the Burn Prevention Foundation to create such a curriculum, and "A Spark of Knowledge" resulted. It is now the designated, standard curriculum for all JFS regional programs in Pennsylvania… and it's now available to anyone, worldwide, wishing to establish their own Juvenile Firestter Intervention Program!

What is included in the curriculum package?
The curriculum itself is broken down into three age groups:

  • Basic (ages 6-9)
  • Intermediate (Ages 10-12)
  • Advanced (Ages 13-17)

It covers topics ranging from the components of fire and the practical use of fire, to understanding the fire service and understanding the consequences of one's actions.

It also includes a pre- and post-test for each group, all necessary forms, and extensive resource list, as well as helpful background information on concepts such as the stages of child development.

Also included with the curriculum is an instructional DVD, which takes one step by step through the process of establishing a JFS Intervention Program.

How can I purchase "A Spark of Knowledge"?
The complete "A Spark of Knowledge" three disc curriculum package is available for purchase through the Burn Prevention Foundation's Website, www.burnprevention.org.
